TheDesign: Designed by Virginia native Alex Avendao in 2022, this redesign caught my eye on Reddit and I thought, “Wow, I couldn’t have redesigned it better myself!” So I reached out and he agreed to let it be part of our Better State Flag series. His design notes state:

Blue – Represents the Virginia skies, as well as the many rivers that are found throughout the state.

Sword & Crown – the sword going through the crown is an element already seen on the current Virginia flag and it reflects its motto sic semper tyrannis (thus always to tyrant).

White Chevron – represents purity and it forms a V which stands for Virginia.

Red – represents England the states colonizer and it also represents the immense influence the English once had, it also represents blood and sacrifice.
